Self-tapes with a reader who never misses a cue

Drop in your sides or the whole script. Slate splits it into scenes, characters and lines, reads your scene partner out loud, and records a casting-ready tape with a slate.

Reader waits for your last words

Features

From a PDF to a finished tape in one app

Reads any script file

PDF (scans too), Word, RTF, plain text, Final Draft and Fountain, plus photos of paper sides and screenshots. Slate finds scenes, characters and lines, and flags anything it is unsure about.

A reader that listens

The reader speaks your partner’s lines and waits until you finish yours. Speech recognition runs on the device. Set the pause, the pace and the volume in the final mix.

Rehearse until off book

Full lines, first letters only, or hidden lines with a hint on tap. Loop a tough passage and see how many prompts you needed.

Record like a pro set

Framing guides, an eyeline mark, light and sound checks, a teleprompter next to the lens, and a slate card with your name, role, height and agency.

Exports casting accepts

Presets for Casting Networks, Actors Access, Spotlight, e-TALENTA and others. 1080p, the right size, a file name from your template. Save to Photos, Files or YouTube.

Commercial auditions

No script? Build a shot list: slate, left profile, right profile, full body, hands. Slate walks you through each shot and saves them as separate files.

Made by an actor & director

A director’s eye on every self-tape

Slate is made by Igor Hnes, a Ukrainian actor and film director from Kyiv. He records his own self-tapes, and his short films screen at international festivals. He knows a tape from both sides of the camera.

He knows what makes a tape work: the framing, the eyeline, clean sound and a partner who gives you something to play against. Slate brings all of that to your iPhone, so your tape looks like it was shot on set.

FAQ

Questions

Does my script leave my phone?

No. Parsing, speech recognition and system voices all run on your iPhone. The only exception is Pro cloud voices: after you agree, the text of your partner’s lines is sent to our server to make the audio. The server keeps nothing and logs no text.

Which file formats work?

PDF, including scanned pages, DOCX, RTF, TXT, Final Draft (FDX) and Fountain. You can also photograph paper sides, import screenshots, or paste text from the clipboard. Share a PDF from Mail or a messenger straight into Slate.

Which languages does it support?

The app is in English and Ukrainian. Scripts can be in English, Ukrainian, Polish, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Czech, Slovak, Romanian, Turkish and more. Cloud voices speak 29 languages.

Do I need headphones?

They help. With AirPods or wired headphones the reader stays out of your microphone and Slate mixes its track in cleanly afterwards. Without headphones the reader plays from the speaker and Slate just balances the levels.

Is there an Android version?

Not yet. Slate needs an iPhone with iOS 17 or later.
